Metric Modulation Calculator

Use the Metric Modulation Calculator to compute tempo adjustments based on metric modulation principles. For a quick calculation, select Basic Calc and enter values for Old Tempo (bpm), Number of Pivot Note Values in the New Measure, and Number of Pivot Note Values in the Old Measure. Leave Metric Modulation (New Tempo) empty to calculate it automatically.

For a detailed calculation, choose Advanced Calc, where you input values for Old Tempo (bpm), New Note Value, and Old Note Value. The Advanced Metric Modulation (New Tempo) will display the adjusted tempo automatically upon calculation. Click Calculate to get the results or Reset to clear all fields.

Metric Modulation Calculator

This calculator helps you determine the new tempo based on changes in note values between measures. Use the Basic or Advanced option, filling in the necessary details for accurate modulation results.

Old Tempo (bpm): Enter the original tempo in beats per minute (bpm).

Number of Pivot Note Values in the New Measure: Enter the count of pivot note values in the new measure.

Number of Pivot Note Values in the Old Measure: Enter the count of pivot note values in the old measure.

Metric Modulation (New Tempo): Enter or leave blank to calculate the new tempo.

Input Field Purpose

Input Field Purpose
Old Tempo (bpm) Enter the initial beats per minute for the piece.
Number of Pivot Note Values in the New Measure Specify the number of pivot note values in the new measure for modulation.
Number of Pivot Note Values in the Old Measure Specify the number of pivot note values in the original measure for modulation.
Metric Modulation (New Tempo) This field displays the calculated tempo after modulation. Leave it empty for automatic calculation.
New Note Value Enter the relative note value (e.g., Quarter = 1, Eighth = 0.5) for the new tempo.
Old Note Value Enter the relative note value for the original tempo.
Advanced Metric Modulation (New Tempo) Displays the new tempo after advanced calculation, based on modulation settings.

How To Calculate

Example 1 – Basic Calculation

Step Calculation Process
Step 1 Enter Old Tempo (bpm) as 120.
Step 2 Enter Number of Pivot Note Values in the New Measure as 4.
Step 3 Enter Number of Pivot Note Values in the Old Measure as 3.
Step 4 Leave Metric Modulation (New Tempo) blank.
Result The calculator displays the New Tempo as a result of modulation.

Example 2 – Advanced Calculation

Step Calculation Process
Step 1 Enter Old Tempo (bpm) as 100.
Step 2 Enter New Note Value as 0.5 (e.g., Eighth note).
Step 3 Enter Old Note Value as 1 (e.g., Quarter note).
Step 4 Click Calculate to view the Advanced Metric Modulation (New Tempo).
Result The calculator displays the adjusted New Tempo in bpm based on the advanced settings.
